Guns permits in Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s gun control law has been amended recently. In order to ensure safety for local residents and immigrants, the country has introduced certain restrictions.

It is still possible to carry firearms in Costa Rica, provided you have all documents and permits approved by the Costa Rican government.

It should be borne in mind that all firearms will remain at customs until permits are obtained and other necessary documents are submitted to the Ministry of Public Security (Ministerio de Gobernacion, Policia y Seguridad Publica).

Costa Rican law (Guns and Explosives Law # 7530 or Ley de Armas y Explosivos) allows every citizen or permanent resident to have up to three (soon to be reduced to two) pistols and semi-automatic weapons.

However, rifles must not be owned by private individuals. Temporary residents are not allowed to purchase, register or carry weapons in Costa Rica.
